well, not sure why it doesn’t work for othres, but I’ve just recently made a trip for 2hrs drive, was using my GPS on my iphone 3G and then needed to charge up, so I used the cable and the car charger, it works, it charged up to 100% within an hour.
The wall charger works too, I’ve tested out for 1 day without any problem.
So did the cable, plugged into my PC’s USB and not only it charged but also it synched without problem.
I’ve been testing 5 different cables (USB non Apple ones) and this is so far one that had worked for me.

This package is useless. Cheaply made and the products could potentially cause damage to your iPhone. If the battery is under 35% it won’t even charge, and even then it constantly leaves your iPhone vibrating like you just plugged it in. Both the car charger and the wall charger were having this problem – for me, and the other person I bought it for. If I could give this product -5 stars, I would. Complete waste of any money spent. Very worth it to just buy the actual Apple charger.

The retractable USB cable is really convenient. I would like to replace the half-dozen other USB cables currently hanging on a hook with retractable cables. These should come in longer versions and other types.

I bought five of these for my iPhone 3G to help me cope with its less-than-wonderful battery. They are cheap enough that it made sense to get one for each place I spend time charging. I have one in place in each car, at work, in my home office, and on the nightstand next to my bed. I keep the original Apple charger in my computer bag for on-the-go charging. It’s quite convenient to sit-and-plug at the places I most need a charge.
Mine all work fine for both charging from a wall socket and backing up to the computer. Given the large number of problems reported by many other reviewers, I wonder if there are problems with particular batches or factory runs of the product’s cord? Although I am a happy customer, I think I have somehow been a lucky one. If I needed more of these I would probably buy the Universal Apple iPod USB Charger Kit just to be safe. Its price is only a few cents higher.
An additional caution is that the retraction mechanism for the cord seems poorly made and begins to break with longer use. One of mine that I used frequently eventually started throwing off little shards of plastic and not “holding” at all of the possible stops. Not a problem for the way I use them, but your mileage may vary.

Product so poorly made that it did not work. Wasn’t worth the effort to return it so I threw it away.
