I’m going to guess that most of the good reviews on this site are fake.
XM radio, through this box, sounds like a 64k mono MP3…. really distorted and bad.
My conjecture is that XM Radio, lacking funding now, has quietly reduced the digital “footprint” of its satellite stream… so 2 years ago, everything sounded good, but now it’s like a REALLY bad MP3.
I noticed this in my car (where I still subscribe to XM) — but listening to it on this box, I realized that there would be no way to tolerate the audio compression in a more quiet listening environment….

The sound quality is not what I expected and there the volume limit is too low.

This item used to be $99.00 on Amazon, and is generally around $100 anywhere else. Now they are selling it for $253.00? What’s the deal Amazon?

I got my boombox quickly and followed the directions to make it work. It seemed to be all working perfectly with the receiver doing it’s thing and the antenae working great with three bars. Wonderful! So ready set go~ not. No sound, so I cranked it up, 12, 15, 20, 15, no sound! Ok, went thru the trouble directions. No sound. Called up the tech support for the receiver and spent some time with them. They decided it was a hardware problem with the boombox and had me call Audiovox’s support. Guess what! They don’t answer their phones! Yikes, what a shocker! I left messages, but no reply. That was Thursday night and Friday morning….. of course no one there on the week end. So, Monday I will start leaving messages again. If I have a faulty product, I want to get it shipped back pronto. If they can tell me what I am doing wrong and get me some xm sound, I’d like it now, rather than later. I guess I am spoiled that most tech support actually answers their phones. If I get some satisfaction, I’ll update my review. The boombox looks like it would be great. I just hope I can report some sound success soon.
Update #1
I finally got a return call on 7/27/09 and they said to send it to them, my expense and they’d fix it or send me another one, their expense. I did and I am waiting for either a call that it’s repaired or a replacement. I’ll send an update then.

Bought this unit for use in my office. Using the Delphi XpressRC head unit (which I really like). Basically I would say this ‘boombox’ is barely only average. The sound quality is very lacking/limited; there obviously is no tuner; speakers cannot be detached; I’d say this thing should sell for $50 tops.
My office is an extremely quiet office. Unfortunately this unit cannot be turned down very low. It would be nice to have more graduated sound levels.
Not sure if this is a problem related to the boombox or the Delphi XpressRC, but if you power the combination off with the remote, you cannot turn the combination back on with the remote.
Lastly, just a word about antenna positioning: they say to have a south-facing place for the antenna. I took a gamble since my office only has a west-facing window. They are right!! You need a south-facing antenna!! My sound quality is pretty compromised with a lot of static.
In summary, this boombox is sufficient but certainly not worth the $99 I paid for it.
