can anyone tell me if this prints only black and white or color as well?

Purchased the Brother HL-2170W for my son. We left it in its box and dropped it with him at college. It seems to have a dead port, two different computers failed to recognize the printer. Since my son had discarded the box (and packing slip) the day he moved into his dorm, I’m not sure what to do. So, I purchased a Brother HL-2140 at Staples for 69 bucks (after rebate) This printer uses the same toner cartrige as the 2170W, which I also purchased from Amazon. I drove the 2140 to him and it worked perfectly. I also paid Staples 15 bucks for a two-year protection plan on the new printer. So, I have the DOA 2170W sitting in our guest room collecting dust… but not doing much else for the momment.

As is the case with every other person here, it is virtually impossible to get this printer to work…period…if you want to set it up to work as a wireless printer, good luck…no can do. I’ve now spent over 3 hours on this with no luck.
The instruction guide is useless.
I will consult with a network specialist friend of mine regarding this but never have I had such problems with a printer. If he can’t get it to work within a reasonable period of time, I’ll gladly send it back and get something functional.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY…BUY SOMETHING ELSE…DO YOURSELF A HUGE FAVOR!!
I wouldn’t ordinarily trash a product, but this is the worst I’ve ever seen. Don’t make the mistake I made…buy an HP, Epson, etc…Brother should be ashamed for even making this thing…virtually NOBODY can get it to work…for those who said they hooked it up successfully through a home network for wireless function, please print detailed instructions!

I’ve always had ink jet printers as my local/desk printer…but was tired of how junky they seem to be these days and decided to switch to a laser. Big mistake. The fan runs pretty loud (at least when you have it right next to you)for about 5 minutes even after just one page. I’ll be returning this and replace it with another inkjet I guess.

The new printer price for this machine amounts to false advertising because the “starter” toner cartride yields less than 1000 sheets at 5% coverage which means YOU HAVE TO FACTOR IN THE COST OF NEW TONER CARTRIDGE INTO THE NEW PRINTER PRICE. This puts the price point out of competition. I did not find this out until after installing and using the machine for less than 3 months at light volume. The paltry amount of toner in this starter cartridge is very dissappointing.
Installation also was bumpy requiring tech service call.
I now regret buying this printer and would have chosen another brand had I known.
