Rating SHOULD be 4 stars, but after initially setting it at one (see below), Amazon won’t let me change it.
Print quality is excellent, and print speed (after initial start-up) is very fast. Toner cartridges supplied are the standard-yield units, NOT low-yield starter cartridges. Colors are accurate and natural-looking. Black text is razor-sharp.
Initially I could not get this printer to work as a network printer, and initial response to an inquiry to Brother was slow, thus the initial 1-star rating, and the original review title “NOT a network printer”.
Brother tech support DID eventually call in response to my inquiry, and with their help, the printer is now functioning as a network printer. Although the initial response was slow, the tech support received was EXCELLENT!!

I don’t know why this printer gets such good reviews.
Compared to the HP I owned previously, this printer’s colors are washed out and weak.
Hooking it up to your network is easy for Macs but terrible for Windows machines. The instructions call for using Windows to “find a printer on the network,” a procedure that everyone knows never works. I finally had to use the software to give it a static IP address because nothing else worked.
Also, envelope handling is horrible. It will mangle every #10 envelope you run through it, no matter how many different kinds of envelopes you try.
The paper tray has an indicator to show how much paper is left, which often doesn’t work.
I also found it very slow to turn out that first page.
Additionally, at 67 pounds this is a ridiculously heavy, and huge, printer.
I will dump mine as soon as the toner runs low, and probably buy an unreliable HP model, which will at least work much better over its short lifespan.

Switched from inkjet to laser printer. Very happy with the speed. The print quality could be little bit better though.
Overall for little over $200, its a good deal.

This printer is installed on Macs and Windows through an Apple Extreme over an Ethernet home network. The printer doesn’t support wireless, but the Mac’s and Window’s PC’s are wireless and communicate with the Apple Extreme. It is the easiest printer installation I have ever encountered when I compare it to other printer brands I’ve worked with. Brother’s s/w makes the driver installation on different PCs and Macs a breeze.
I was cautious to assembling the printer because much of it is plastic and the parts come from China and appeared flimsy to me. I didn’t want to break anything and then have to be on the phone to either Amazon or Brother. But this is my personal feelings and probably not justified.
Color print quality is not as vibrant as on an Ink Jet, but I was able to print a photo of my nephew and send it to my mother on photo quality paper, and she was delighted with the results.
Printing in duplex mode, which was a serious purchasing consideration for me is awkward but in no way takes away from the product. The front page is printed, delivered to the out put tray, and then pulled back into the printer to print on the back page, and then back to the output tray. I would have suspected that the duplex printing would have been done inside the printer. Nevertheless it works, and I haven’t had anything get snarled yet.
Duplex printing is either manual or automatic. On a Windows PC it is easier to setup automatic duplex printing through MS Office 2003. My Mac uses 2008 and I’ve yet to be able to setup automatic duplex printing. I’ve been working with Brother support on this issue and they are very responsive and helpful. When someone in tech support was unable to provide me with an answer via email, they asked me to call their hot line. This is called service!
Considering the price and service from Amazon, the printer’s reliability and quality from Brother, and my research of course, I feel it is a win-win situation for everyone. I made a great choice and am happy with this product.
