It is nice to have 500GB of storage. The unit is quiet, ready to use out of the box, and is easy to set up.
There is no one-button backup, and you cannot “stop” and disconnect it once it is plugged into a computer via the USB cable.
I am not sure whether this is how it was designed, but I have tried several computers with WinXP or Win2000 and all of them showed me the same message cannot stop the mass storage device. So the only “safe” way to stop and disconnect an external hard drive is to shut down the computer… huh??

Ive had this HD less than three months, and it already failed.
Absolute garbage. And its not like they make their own drives, they use low end Western Digital drives with their enclosures.

Pros: 1TB for about $100. Wow! Very attractive case.
Cons: Doesn’t have an on/off switch. The power-saver software that comes with it is supposed to turn it off after a specified amount of idle time, but I could not get it to work. It either did not put the drive to sleep, or if it did, it would keep coming back on for no apparent reason. It makes considerably more noise than the drive in my laptop, so I do not want to leave it always on. I have to pull the power plug to turn it off when not in use.

He’s correct on the backup. A relative did the same thing, and was intimidated at first with the terminal, but had no issues. Happy camper

Excellent product. Highly recommend. It is quiet, fast, easy to connect. The drivers install automatically.
Note: You can view my video product review at expotv.com, demonstrating opening and installing this external hard drive, including a description of the included softare : (http://www.expotv.com/videos/reviews/7/77/Buffalo-HD-CE10TU2-10TB-DriveStation-Ex/286393). The software on the external hard drive includes: TurboUSB utility, Memeo backup software and encryption software. The serial number for Memeo is on the back of the installation pamphlet. You can format it as an NTFS drive but it comes formated with FAT32. The drive works with both Macs (OS extended mode) and PCs, and even Linux machines (XFS drive capable).
The Buffalo DriveStation USB 2.0 external hard drive was on sale. Great deal with backup software included.
Highly recommend. It looks great, sounds quiet – has 1 Terabyte of space! A good deal even when not on sale.
Pros: External USB : so easy to connect & install, Attractive: Space saving & quiet, Power savings mode – Earth Friendly
Cons: The included Memeo software may be great but did not get it to immediately store individual selected files; need a printed quick get-started guide for the software; the software is on the hard drive, so to format in NTFS, I believe it is necessary to copy the software off the drive and then format the drive.
