Where do you get wicks? I’ve been looking all over and Amazon doesn’t even stock it… Makes it kind of useless after a while…

I ordered one of these humidifiers about 3 months ago and when it arrived it didn’t seem to work well. It stayed on when the humidity was higher than the “shut-off” setting and it made a lot of noise. After I had it a couple of weeks, it started to “freeze up”- that is the fan motor wouldn’t come on when the humidistat activated it…..for a while it would work If I “hand started” it….I took it apart looking for a problem that I could fix but to no avail….so I ordered a replacement unit…and this one works fine…..I suspect that the vendor shipped me a unit which had been returned the first time around….the package had been opened and it was missing the “filling hose” and sample of humidifier antiseptic…but I didn’t really think about that until it started to fail….beware!

The first one broke in 2 months and the repair did not make it thru 2 winters ! When it worked it was too loud for a bedroom while on HI and at lower speeds did not perform well ! Along with expensive filters this is a no go !!

This humidifier is a beast! It’s about the size of a TV set. However, it’s on casters, so you can easily roll it out of the way.
When you get the fan really rolling, it moves some serious air. I’m not convinced it’s evaporating as much volume of water as claimed, though, because the tanks sometimes last for days before needing a refill. Also, the “empty” indicator is very low-tech. It has already failed and we need to check the tanks periodically.
But the bottom line is, our house was unbearable dry and now it’s better. I can’t argue with the price of the unit or the amount of electricity it uses. Overall, I prefer this wick/fan system over our old humidifier, which took lots of juice and shut off every time the heating element needed scraping to remove crusted-on minerals.

We had a Bemis humidifier (12 gal) that just died after working well enough for NINE winter seasons. As best I can tell, this Essick 4D7-800 is the same model (apparently Essick took over the Bemis products years ago), but with added digital controls. In my online research for a new “whole-house” humidifier yesterday, I found more complaints than praise for ALL brands and models. So, I just ordered this unit, with fingers crossed, in hopes I can get 9 years out of this one, too. Yes, our old unit was cheaply made and the blowing air was moderately loud on high, but it did ok for our 4300 sq. ft home. (We also have a humdifiying unit on our entire heating system, but still need a boost from that!) We ran it pretty nonstop for about 4-5 months a year, only cleaned it once after each season, and changed the wick (~$17) once a year. We refilled the large, heavy plastic bottles once a day and added a small cap of generic bacteriostat treatment to about every other bottle refill. The appearance of the unit itself is not as bad as the fake plastic wood look, and pretty unobtrusive in our foyer.
