This is a filter. Air passes through it due to differential pressure. The mesh like structure impedes the movment of dirt, dust, feathers, bug, hair, etc. This fact may be evidenced by examining one after a sufficient period of use in an environment where such junk is in the air.
Forensic analysis of the mesh trapped junk may reveal fascinating detailed knowledge about the locale in which the filter unit had operated..
These mesh carbon fiber structures should be exchanged periodically for a new unit. The filth ridden one disposed of in a plastic bag, placed in the trash, and hands washed afterwards.

I put this on my machine and restarted it and the warning light to replace the filter went back on after 2 days. So I am pretty dissappointed.

I follow the manufacturer’s recommendation to change the pre-filter every 3 months on all my Honeywell Air Cleaners with HEPA filters. These replacement filters come boxed in a set of two. The pre-filter simply wraps around the round HEPA filter, which is inside the unit, and attaches to itself by means of two velcro fasteners. It takes less than five minutes to change the pre-filter. In between changes, I vacuum my pre-filters to remove accumulated dust and pet hair from them. These pre-filters do help to remove some odors from rooms, especially if you are able to keep the space enclosed where you have the air cleaner running.
Be sure to keep a box or two of these pre-filters on hand in case they become back ordered. The HEPA filter needs to be changed in 1-3 years, depending on conditions where it is located.

I have been using Honeywell air filtration units for several years, and I’ve found it’s wise to change the pre-filters regularly. But I’m sick and tired of cutting the pre-filters to fit the HEPA filter of my air-cleaning machine. It’s difficult to see the perforations where the cuts must be made. And for me, making the cuts is arduous.
I don’t understand why Honeywell doesn’t offer pre-filters that are cut to fit each machine. I guess the filters work just fine, but they seem expensive for what I’m receiving, especially considering that I’m required to do a great deal of work to make the pre-filters ready for use.
The pre-filters are NOT worth 12 dollars (or whatever), but I would be happier to pay that sum if the filters were pre-cut.
