Looking for a second printer to add to photo printer. Much better than expected. Everything HP advertised.

HP setup software failed to install wire and wireless mode. Could not find it’s own product using ethernet install with USB cable. Router was set at 192.168.x.x
After getting the printer to talk to the network, the local hp driver automatically set the Optional Tray 2 as installed. There is no Tray 2 installed in my setup. The printer keep looking for Tray 2 and keep giving paper jam errors. (this occur on all 4 pc installations (xp, and vista)) Had to go into the driver and fix that little problem.
Never could get the wireless to work. (even after setting up proper tcp/ip and wep settings. I was able to setup my Acer one and the old compaq laptop onto wireless router with no problem. This HP just refuse to do so)
This printer takes a long time before settling down each time it is turned on. If the unit looses power, it takes about 3 minutes before it settles down. Maybe it is cleaning the heads. It will use 0.05ml of ink for what ever it is doing.
It has replaceable print heads (2 heads with 2 colors each). This could be a nice feature if the printhead last, otherwise, two print head cost more than the orig. printer price. Perhaps a disposal printer at that point. Of the two company hp plotters that i manage, one had printhead failure at 36% of life, and the other had head failure at 68% of life. Print head life is undocumented for the 940 series.
The included ink appears to be able to print about 14+ full color boarderless photo print (depends on image). This is based upon report of ink usage via printer’s build-in web server.
Print quality is fine. Ink Bleed through on back side is a problem. Using 92/20lb paper, it is very easy the read the text from the back side. Funny thing, the printer does not use the duplex when printer it’s own reports.
Both the printhead and ink have expiration dates programed into the chips each unit. I am not sure if the printer will come to complete stop when the expiration date occurs, or will it keep printing. On the HP 500 plotter, it gives a bunch of warning, and keeps printing. Hope it is the same here.
Since HP is in the business selling ink. It is good that this printer have a high page count for the 940xl ink.
The duplex unit is nice, but when duplex printing, it prints one side, then pause a few seconds (perhaps to let the ink dry) then continues onto the second side.
The printer drive does not have a INK saver mode.
Initial setup installs YAHOO Toolbar without asking. Come on HP, how pushy. (dumb move by hp)
Install software also install 6 hp utilities some of which try to sell more INK. imagine that.

finally got the wireless to work.
on the Web based printer status i see that the printer uses color ink, even though i ask it to use black ink only.
print job 48 and 49 are black ink only prints (as specified in printer driver). Looks like the printer decided to clean it’s color heads also and use up some color ink. Expect to buy color ink replacement eventhough you don’t print color!!!!!

Have used for 1 week. Excellent quality, fast print speed. The last printer I bought I threw away. At $90.00 for toner, (100 prints). Quality of printer is close to old HP’s. We still have a HP Laser Jet that is over 10 years old and works perfectly.

We have had this printer about a month and are very happy with it. Good feature set, good print quality. We decided to get this model because we did not need all the other features that are included in the all in ones. I believe the more that is there and not needed, the more that can break and take away your use of the what was needed. It prints very quickly and the printouts are very good. The are two things that you have to be aware of and make sure you are OK with. One, this is a big printer, it has a large foot print and you need to make sure you have the space for it. Two, the printer has a long start cycle. It takes about a minute for the printer to start up when you turn it on in the morning and it cycles through its start routine. This cycle is also a bit loud. The printer is not overly loud when it prints, but the start cycle is a bit noisey.

I’ve read some of the other reviews concerning this printer discussing noise, print time and paper handling. Well, here’s me take. I have had the printer for over a month now. The printer is far quieter than the Photosmart 7550 I had before (it sounded like two monkies with hammers were working inside). The 8000 is very quiet to me. I use a PC with the XP op system and it takes a total of 30 seconds to print anything I’ve printed so far. It usually takes 12 to 14 seconds to initiallize and around 15 to 18 seconds to print the page – whether all text or partial graphics. I’ve not had any paper handling issues either – though I do just use HP All Purpose paper. I haven’t tried unusual paper types. Bottom line: if you just want a printer you can count on for everyday stuff then this is the one.
