I fully realize I may be the only person who cares about what I’m about to say… but I feel I should mention it anyway just in case.
First of all, this drive works just fine from Windows. Since 99.99% of buyers will purchase it for use in Windows, it’s important I say that first.
However, this 3rd generation drive does NOT work from DOS. The previous two generations, the little rectangle (1st) and the flask (2nd), DO work perfectly from DOS (both USB and Firewire)… so they somehow broke DOS compatibility with this 3rd generation drive.
In case you’re curious, I use these Iomega external hard drives to backup all of my PCs. The only way to REALLY get a snapshot backup of Windows is to do it from DOS so Windows isn’t running. I do this using the DOS version of Ghost (I use the 2003 version).
Just wanted to mention it in case anyone else wants to use this drive in such a manner.

Unlike the previous generations (I just bought 21 of the first-generation, rectangle-looking FW400/USB2 portable drives), this unit does not have an aluminum shell; it uses plastic instead. The case is held together by plastic clips. As a result, it cannot be easily opened. The first and second generations both have aluminum casing and can easily be opened by removing two screws. This is important because if you have data that you need to recover from the hard drive and the only thing wrong are the USB/FW controller on it, you don’t have to send the whole thing out and have your data on the loose out there.
The lack of heat dissipation on this unit means it is not suitable for TimeMachine backup or other constant-use situatiuons. Other than that, the FW800 interface reduces operation time and would make it a fine candidate as a data transportation device.
The second-generation design is funky. It looks like a liquor flask. Leave it to Iomega (a Utah company) to come up with such design. The beauty of the second generation is that although it is a bit ‘fatter’, it has two FW400 ports and a USB port (or just one single USB). The dual-port design comes in handy. The second-generation is being replaced by this plastic thing, so those who have FireWire 400 only should consider picking up the second-generation, as companies are putting them on sale to clear them out.
Newer does not mean it’s better. Sometimes old designs are brought back because the new design is inferior. SanDisk Cruzer Micro is a perfect example. As for the Iomega, I don’t know how they came up with so many first-generation cases even after the third-generation design was introduced, but after my buying rampage, they have been sold out for good in July 2009.

Thank you for your feedback on the new eGo USB/Firewire Portable Hard Drive. The enclosure is made up of two pieces of solid aluminum. We include a plastic layer under the aluminum on the top cover; this layer improves the efficiency of our assembly process and more importantly, the plastic is critical to drop guard, our industry-leading protection for the drive.
In terms of disassembly, this drive is a sealed enclosure. It is not designed to be opened; in fact, breaking the seal on the enclosure voids your warranty.

Mine died in the first week. It would not make a disk image of a 70GB Hard drive without great difficulty. Then before it completed the task I bought it for, it got too hot to touch, and now draws too much amperage, and the computer disconnects from it with an error message. The thing needs a mechanism to power off. I had to leave it on overnight to make the estimated 6 hour disk image. I will be asking for a new one from Iomega.

I found this drive on sale at a local retailer and decided to give it a try since I really needed something for backing up my two computers and archiving video. I really appreciated the triple interface, three year warranty, and ability to be powered off of the interface ports. I’ve only used it for backup so far, but have thus far been very satisfied with the performance. I used the FireWire 800 on my MacBook Pro and the FireWire 400 on my PowerBook G4. The drive stayed quiet the whole time, although it did get rather warm. CNET’s review of this drive puts it at the top of their list (and an Editor’s Choice) for portable hard drives due to speed and size. Thus far, I would have to agree with their assessment. This is one of the best portable hard drives.

This is a great little drive. It’s very quiet, and while running through my Firewire 800, it was transferring data like a champ. I was a bit nervous given a few reviews about heat, but after putting it under considerable load today, it barely got warm. The only issue I have is the extremely bright light. Don’t look directly at it, because it will leave you with spots in your vision. At least I shouldn’t fear being attacked by a vampire with this thing at my side.
