Like an aircraft black box for your digital data, the ioSafe Solo is the world’s first, high capacity, fireproof & waterproof external hard drive. Using a simple USB 2.0 interface, the ioSafe Solo works with your PC or Mac just like any other USB external hard drive. Compatible with almost all backup programs that work with external hard drives. A combination of patented and patent pending ioSafe technologies work to allow for airflow cooling during normal operation yet protect the data from fire and floods. FloSafe vents are open during normal operation. Active cooling is provided by a near silent fan that drives air through the FloSafe vents. During a fire event, the patented FloSafe vents automatically close to prevent extreme outside heat from damaging the hard disk inside the enclosure. DataCast is our proprietary endothermic insulation that vaporizes embedded water molecules during a fire and works hard to protect the inner hard drive from damage even though the outside temperatu… More >>

Until they offer a mirrored RAID inside or RAID level 5, this is nothing more than another hard drive, just with a fancy case.

I was looking for an external hard drive but a friend told me about the ioSafe. It’s a fireproof/waterproof external hard drive!!!! I’ve been waiting for something like this for a long time.
It’s about as big as a two slice toaster and is deceptively heavy. After doing more research, I found a video online about it at the Wall Street Journal:
http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/01/09/ces-drowning-and-broiling-your-hard-drive/
It seems the insulation is what makes it heavy (about 15 lbs). Makes sense.
Apparently, they’ve come up with a way to add ventilation, fireproof insulation and waterproof protection for regular hard drives. Very clever.
The ioSafe also comes with what they call a Disaster Recovery Service. Apparently it’s a no-questions asked policy (i’m sure they’ll have to ask you some questions though). If I have a fire, flood, hard drive failure, whatever – They’ll help me get my data back by spending up to $1000 of their money!!!
This is one of those things I wish I’d thought of. I love my ioSafe and put all my pictures and tax data on it. I just plugged the USB connection into my laptop and dragged/dropped the data as a backup.
I use Microsoft’s SyncToy (freeware) to synchronize my laptop to my ioSafe whenever my computer is idle. It’s awesome.
I also checked out the Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive WDH1U5000N and the Iomega Prestige 500 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34270 but both of those are just regular hard drives. They’re a lot cheaper though if you don’t need the extra protection for your data, you’ll save about $50 bucks. For me with my luck and my tendency to succumb to Murphy’s Law in all cases, I’m sticking with my ioSafe.

The ioSafe provides you with the confidence and peace of mind that your data is completely secure. If there is a disaster around your computer: fire, smoke, flood, a fire sprinkler spewing water down, a cup of coffee falling on top of your CPU, you can rest easy. ioSafe will retrieve your data when the other solutions cannot make it happen. When your digital data really matters, get an ioSafe!

Given this drive costs approximately $50 more than an unprotected drive of the same storage capacity, you’d be nuts not to purchase.
I viewed the WSJ demos video showing the drive being dropped into a pool, then heated until it reached 1500 degrees F, then cooled off with a hose and then the drive was removed and data retrieved. I really would have paid $100 or even more for both water and fire protection, so this is a steal. I purchases a 500M and 1T drive and both plugged in and just worked.
I believe this product is a great value and I rest easy knowing my data is protected on this device.

I learned about this product from a friend and couldn’t believe it. I have thousands of photos and videos of my kids as they were growing up and all are digital. We have friends that lost all of their pictures in a house fire caused by an electrical short. This thought just scared me to death. Both of my kids are in college now and I just couldn’t bear to lose these memories. I received the product in just a few days and hooked it up. It honestly took longer to submit my order than it did to get it working with my XP laptop. Backups using the windows backup utility are simple and fast. Knowing I have this extra level of protection has made a big difference in my life.
