I have had my 500GIG Lacie drive about a year. A couple of weeks ago the drive fell off a chair I had placed it on. This is never a good thing for a hard drive, but to my surprise the 18″ fall broke the spindle inside the hard drive. Thus, no more hard drive. I was under the impression that hard drives are supposed to be able to withstand a drop (while running) from an even greater height, but perhaps not. These external hard drives of course are nothing more than IDE to USB converters in an enclosure housing an off-the-shelf hard drive such as what you would find in a desktop computer. In this case it was a Seagate Barracuda drive. Oh well.
The bigger disappointment was with Lacie tech support. There is none. Like most companies these days they don’t want to talk to their customers on the phone, so I filled out an online form requesting warranty service. Lacie chose to never respond. I didn’t want to have to carve out a section of time from my life to deal with a company that’s not on top of its warranty support, so I just bought a different brand replacement, and wil hope for the best.

Not for having in a toom as a backup or source of music. Otherways works good.

I purchased this external LaCie hard drive to use as a back up drive for my home business. Since it doesn’t seem to have a fan in it, I wouldn’t recommend using it on a constant basis, maybe only use it for occasional back ups. The software that comes with it is great for backing up, especially on macs. I was so used to using briefcases in the windows environment, and the Silver Keeper software that comes with it is close. I recommend this drive as a back up.

Someone suggested I make my hardware purchase on Ebay versus the drive down to OfficeDepot… it was fast, efficient, and saved me time. Thanks a lot!

If you want to protect your computer data against a hard disk crash, I would recommend investing in this external hard drive.
