I had been debating buying an Oppo up-scaler (top reviews, but pricy for my budget) to tide me over until the purchase of a later-generation BD player, when I came across this DVD player at amazon.com. Marantz, 1080p, up-to-the-moment DAC specs: all at less than $100. I jumped on the purchase lest the sale should end. I’m very sorry I did. The machine sounds at start-up like a plane taking off, and hovers like a helicopter once the disc starts to play. When one listens to such a machine competing with a movie/music for decibels, one must begin to wonder whether the machine possesses much worth. Adding to this deep disappointment, the machine is extremely slow–very much like a first-generation BD player. Surely, there is no excuse in 2009. I had been feeling that Marantz was getting further and further behind the performance and technology forefront, and now I am convinced that it is so. I may return this and go back to searching for lower-priced Oppos on ebay (getting harder and harder to find in new condition given their discontinuation), or look for an old Panasonic 97 (which I currently own, and outperforms the Marantz in every way save for the Panny’s 1080i upconversion limit). I hope that this review is helpful to others who are also in the quality-on-a-budget boat.

I just purchsed this unit along with a new Sony LCD tv for our bedroom. Could not be more happy with either product. The Marantz is an awesome, solid unit. Very high quality build. No need for Blu Ray here, the picture quality is incredible! In fact, my 17 year old just purchased a Samsung LCD for his room, and I am buying this same unit for him. Can’t beat the quality or the price.

I don’t know about the previous reviewer but my Marantz DVD player is great. It is very quiet, the picture and sound are excellent, and it is a fine looking unit. At a price of 82.00 total with shipping it seems you can’t go wrong unless of course you recieve a damaged unit. Hopefully I won’t have a similar problem but the player seems very well made. The only drawback is that you can’t have audio coming out of the HDMI and coaxial digital outputs at the same time. The HDMI audio needs to be off in order to use the coax digital output. The start up time is nowhere near the load time of a BD player. I had the Samsung BD1500 and that took at least 40-60 seconds to load, the Marantz takes about 15 seconds from the instant the tray closes. BTW the Samsung stopped working after 6 months that is why I purchased this and the pic quality is almost the same as BD. I’m not buying another BD player until they get all the bugs out.
