Loved this little drive until I needed it. At the direction of my IT guy who had spent the whole day trying to fix hard drive, I reformatted the hard drive, but didn't think to unplug the backup that I was counting on. The restore process reformatted the backup drive to the size of the hard drive and erased all the backed up data. Two years lost. Now thinking about a 2nd redundant back up option.

At the first sign of data loss or computer trouble, UNPLUG the back up drive.

What a nightmare.
The drive finally appeared on my work XP machine - copied all the data I needed for the weekend. I run Vista Business at home - the drive will not appear. Granted, the Seagate website has plenty of Knowledge base articles but none of the work.
The initial sketchiness of the tinkering it took to get it to work on XP left me a little worried - being optimistic I thought Vista would detect it no problem. Disk Management is unable to do anything with this drive under Vista Business. I have a dead weight, unless Seagate e-mail support comes up with something, but I wont hold my breath.

Western Digital drives were 20 bucks more - I'm really thinking I should have just stuck with a drive I know works. Man I'm a Scrooge.

I was happy when this product was listed as compatible with both my Mac and my husband's XP machine. However, not until I scour the seagate/maxtor knowledge base did I discover that this device can't be set up to support both systems. It is formatted for XP, so there's no backing up my files, now. This little drive seems to do everything except what we purchased it for.

Bought this drive 2 days ago, everything worked fine out of the box. Went on a trip and forgot the provided USB 2.0 cable so I went to Office Depot and bought an aptiva USB 2.0 cable. The drive will not work with the generic cable, not sure why. Plugged in my digital camera using the same cable and the camera's storage card shows up fine. I will test the drive with the original cable when I get home, hopefully it still works! Maxtor tech support website is horrible, don't even bother going there for product support.
