I REALLY wanted to love this item. I use Netflix, HULU, and have a lot of personal media on a network server. I eagerly awaited the products arrival. I also planned to re-do my whole network / media access around this product. I have an “electronics closet” about 25 feet away from my HDTV. I use 25′ runs of HDMI from this closet, under the floor, to the TV. So, I was going to add this unit, add an HDMI switcher, connect to my new Wireless N router (all in the electronics closet) and have media bliss. I tried hookup before I made any major moves or installs. I plugged it in, connected a network cable in my closet, hooked up to the HDMI runs, and NOTHING. During troubleshooting, I hooked it up directly to the 3′ HDMI cable from the TV, with a temporary network run of CAT 5, and it worked! When it was working it was pretty cool. However, then called NETGEAR Technical Support and asked why it wouldn’t work with a 25 foot HDMI run and they said it doesn’t work with more than a 3′ run of HDMI. HUH?? Both my DVD and Cablebox have worked for years on a 25′ run. I was definitely frustrated but decided to adapt.
I decided to make it the one exception to my electronics closet, and move the unit out under my TV, with a short run of HDMI and a long cat 5 run to my electronics closet. So, I begin the install on this setup (checked everything before I got too far) and while I’m accessing my NAS from the unit, I lost the network connection. Tried rebooting, but still wouldn’t get a network connection. I checked my router connection, and what did I find the unit FRIED my router, a brand new D-LINK DIR 825 that I got from Amazon (that worked great for the 1 day I had it!). So, needless to say, I think there are some problems with this unit. It showed great potential on the menus and the interface, and I still want it — but, it’s got to work and not fry routers.

This is a step in the right direction, but still ranks as a failure. The Hulu support is done via PlayOn which will cost you and extra $40 and bring the total price to $190. For a little bit more money you can just go get a net-top with an atom 330 and nvidia ion platform and have a lot more capabilities and better 1080P playback.

After looking at the market and deciding to go with the digital entertainer,
i was pleasantly suprised to find the ease of hook-up and use of this device. It has simple common-sense controls and the clarity in hd is phenomenal. This product would make a perfect gift item to a relative or good friend.

Installation is quite easy. just plug ethernet cable and turn it on. If you can work the remote control, you are ready view youtube and other streaming video. If you are not looking complicated unit to stream internet video, this is what you want. I used wireless adapter (WN111V2) and works great too.

Just got this box last week. It’s a good idea, and does a lot of stuff, but it needs a little improvement.
It will play media from a home media server or Windows Media Extender. However, it will not find my Buffalo Terastation NAS on my network, so I can’t play any of my stored files there, unless I share them thru the media extender.
It plays videos on Hulu, YouTube, and Netflix, but only if you install the PlayOn ([...]) client on a PC somewhere on your network so it can stream from there. The Netflix player also has an annual subscription, which is really stupid considering you can get any number of FREE Netflix streaming devices elewhere.
Video quality is sketchy. Some programs have very nice quality, and others are fairly poor. I like the Babylon 5 series on Hulu, and they play nicely on a 36″ LCD. But when I try to stream a local news channel, the picture is marginal, and nowhere near the crisp digital quality one would expect.
All in all, it’s a nice box, I’ll keep it. But I’d like to see a better quality and not have to pay an annual subscription to stream free content!
