I bought a Sony (Blu-Ray) all-in-one system at Costco and decided to return it because for less, I can get a separate Sony Blu-Ray DVD player and this Onkyo 5.1 system for $450 just in time for the holiday. The shipping from Amazon was amazingly fast, and best of all - free.

The sound is awesome, nice clean bass, with zero distortion. It's sleek and looks much more expensive than it really is. The set up is very easy except for the HDMI pass-through. It can confuse a lot of people since HDMI should deliver both audio and video, however the HDMI OUT on this receiver only delivers audio through the TV speakers and not the receiver's speakers, so don't be surprised if you don't hear any sound from your receiver's speakers. You are required to hook up a separate optic cable or coaxial cable from your DVD player / cable box for digital sounds through the receiver's speakers, hence the 3 HDMI IN are useless.

My suggestion is connect the HDMI from your DVD player / cable box directly to your TV and connect a separate optic cable or coaxial cable from your DVD player / cable box to this receiver. This way you have audio through your TV's speakers, without having to use the receiver. And when you need all the sound effects, then just turn on your receiver and you will get amazing 5.1 surround sound. I love listening to music from my cable box through the receiver. It sounds better than some of my CD's. Here's the summary:

PROS: Great sound, unbeatable price

CONS: HDMI pass-through. Too many little buttons. Would be nice if Onkyo were to eliminate all the individual inputs buttons with a dial-knob and label it "Input Selector"

Bought this system because I needed a reciever with more than one HDMI in and an HDMI out. Good for what the price is. I am able to plug my PS3 into it and then run out into my t.v. Can also connect my T.V. to it so I get T.V. sound out of my speakers. The HDMI doesn't prodce sound though, only video, and for sound you have to buy an optical cable for it, but it's easy to hook up.

If you are on a limited budget and want good surround sound, then this is the package for you. It has HDMI capability and you can get surround sound from your cable/satellite package. This is a no-brainer-if you want surround sound for a good price, buy this one!

Great price, fast delivery and rather easy set-up. I still have to run an optical because I cannot get sound to pass-through. Overall sounds great with using default settings, remote is easy to use, though not anything to be in "wow" of.
Overall, sounds good, it works and great price.

I've had this sound system for a little over 3 weeks now. The sound quality is very impressive for the price. It is very crisp and clear. The subwoofer will shake your house down if you set it to the maximum level. My biggest disappointment with this product was that the HDMI passthrough did not work. I did some research online and found others have had an issue with the HDMI feature. However, it wasn't a big deal for me since I was looking more into sound quality.
