This is NOT a special multi-region version of the Philips DVP5990–it simply IS the DVP5990 with printed instructions for making it region-free by punching numbers into the remote. These instructions are available for free on the Web and in the Amazon review for the Philips DVP5090, so there’s no need to pay a premium for this “special” DVP5090. The advertising is very misleading, and Amazon should stop selling this as a unique version of the DVP5990.

Don’t buy this player if you plan to move overseas. As a military family we’re often stuck in other countries and while one of the reviewers said it works with an “adapter”, the company said that it needed a transformer/converter – BIG difference. And the company wasn’t much help. When I tried to get recommendations from their customer service on similar players with dual-voltage capabilities, they didn’t provide any. Just a suggestion on which “brands” would be useful. When I tried to ask for their advice on a specific player, all they would tell me was that it was discontinued. No other suggestions. Needless to say, I returned the player immediately.

I received this today and am very pleased. I connected it to my HDTV using component video cables, plugged it into the wall outlet, turned it on the power, followed the seller’s instructions, set the video for 16:9, and right away I was able to watch PAL DVDs on my North American TV. I am thrilled to now be able to watch DVDs from France and the UK. Great picture, too.

I received this order very quickly, set it up with an HDMI cable on my 42 inch plasma. First test I did was grab some of my downloaded tv shows in DivX format and load them on a 4GB thumb drive. I plugged the drive into the player, pushed the USB button and it loaded all my DivX files like clockwork. I bought this unit because of the price because my main DVD/DivX player (which is the Pioneer DV-48av)is in my bedroom. This DVD player does an excellent job of up converting standard DVD’s and the operation of both the file playing and DVD playing seems to be smooth so far. I haven’t tried to play MP3’s or pictures on it yet but I’m sure it would be fine for that also.

Item was received on time and in good condition.
It plays DVDs and CDs from all zones as the title indicates! Good quality.
Model is slim and chique.
(Note that this works with 120-240 v adaptor, great to use in the americas and if you plan to travel abroad with this to other parts of the world also)
