The receiver has great features which I only got to enjoy for one day.
The receiver turned off while playing the radio and would not come back on. Now, I ‘m dealing with the returns dept to get another one. I’m hoping the first one was a lemon and I’ll get a good one next time around. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Too many buttons and preset settings. I don’t want to spend my life with this thing. After pushing a few buttons and choosing from dozens choices in their menus, after about 15 minutes you can get the sound you like. Then the wife comes in and says she doesn’t like the way it sounds. Simplify, simplify, simplify. Good unit but hard to set up.

If you look carefully for a 5.1 HDMI receiver you will usually find “HDMI Pass Through” types in this price range. If you buy a “pass-through” receiver you end up with the same amount of AV cables (if not more) and set-up is like a by-pass operation.
My primary motivation for buying an HDMI reciever was twofold:
- True 5.1 Sound
- Eliminate the seemingly thousands of cables behind my wall.
My primary equipment:
- Phillips 42″ 1080p LCD
- ATT Uverse HD PVR
- Sony PS3
Room Size:
- 13′ Deep (from couch to Monitor)
- 18′ Wide
The Pioneer specs fit my bill (and my wallet) perfectly. I already had a surround sound receiver so the speakers were all mounted, I just wanted the true HD sound quality. And I got it with this baby. Blu-Ray movies through the PS3 will literally shake the house. And by running direct HDMI, you don’t have to worry about Audio settings on the Receiver (settings like Classical, Movie, Music) because that is coded in the HDMI signal. Just set it on “Direct PCM” and the Receiver does the rest.
I suppose if you have a million inputs and outputs the Pioneer will not suit your tastes because it only provides two (2)HDMI inputs and one (1)HDMI output. There are plenty of receivers out there to satisfy that need but expect to pay $200-$300 more than this receiver.
If you are a gamer, the 5.1 sound enhances every aspect of gameplay. I have actually freaked myself out playing Batman Arkham Asylum late at night. There is literally sound coming from everywhere. I also play sports games and in NHL 10 (EA) the referees whistle blows from a different speaker depending on where you are on the ice. Same goes for crowd noise. Amazing.
One last thing. I had read a few “stopped working after 48 hours” reviews on other sites so I waited a month before posting this review. No problems at all and this thing is on 4-6 hours, 3 or 4 days a week.

I have had a Playstation 3 hooked up to an Insignia receiver and an older Samsung CRT (tube) HDTV. I wanted to upgrade my components, so I started with audio. I figured that since I wanted to upgrade, I should go for HD sound. As you may, or may not know the PS3 (among various other Blu-ray players) decodes HD audio (TrueHD, DTS HD-MA, etc.) so I did not need to spend more money on a receiver that decodes these. This receiver fit the bill almost perfectly. The only problems I really have with it is the lack of HDMI inputs (there are only 2) and the lack of a second set of speaker inputs (or B speakers). Even though neither one is a huge deal breaker for me. To offset these minor gripes the receiver has excellent sound, only 0.05 THD (distortion), tremendous power (110 watts per channel), and can take audio through HDMI. The reciver looks pretty slick as well (no excessive lights). For the price range this receiver can do HD sound for most blu-ray players and sounds better than most receivers twice the price. I am very happy with this purchase and would easily recommend this receiver to anyone.
