I’m a devoted Sonos fan, having installed the Sonos BU250 Multiroom Music System in our living room and separate addition. It’s the greatest. This new S5 seemed the answer for a stand alone unit for a bedroom/work room, but sadly I won’t be buying it.
Reason: lack of FM/AM radio function. Though I admire Sonos to sticking to what they know and do best, a radio feature would make this the ultimate portable music station. Many of my favorite local stations don’t stream their programming so I’m at a loss. For the living room, I’ve attached a line-in directly from the preamp, but was hoping to have OTA radio available on this unit.
If Sonos even considered adding this feature, I’m sure they did a cost analysis- perhaps it concluded unfavorably. $400 IS a hefty price. Would I be wiling to pay more if it had a radio?

Added to my ZP90s and Zone Bridge. Sounds absolutely stunning. Setup was “sonos simple”. Will change the way you use music.

Every now and then you buy something that is the epitome of what it’s supposed to be. You are 100% satisfied – thrilled to have spent the money. The Sonos S5 is one of those products. Is it cheap – nope. Does it solve world hunger – nope. Does it do everything it’s supposed to do extremely well – yep. I would not consider myself an audiophile, but in my fairly large kitchen/great room the sound is absolutely room filling and terrific – think of the best from Bose – maybe better. System set up was simple, simple, simple. I added the S5 to an existing Sonos network in minutes. I’m just trying to decide how many more I’m going to buy. For most all casual listening situations, the S5 is all you need – possibly more than you need. Well done Sonos. Now….a weather proof/hardened version for the garage or deck?

Like everything in the Sonos line, this product absolutely delivers on every promise made by the manufacturer. Works perfectly as advertised – I’ll probably end up buying several more. Worth every penny.
By the way, it also sounds great.

I already have a Sonos system in my house consisting of 3 rooms, so I bought this all-in-one to add a fourth room. Compared to the fully sized sonos amp and sonos speakers the sound is understandably smaller but still great. And it integrated with my current system perfectly. Great for those smaller rooms or for a spot where you don’t have the space for a full sized sonos setup. I think a great sonos whole house system would be the full sized sonos amps with sonos speakers in all the big rooms like the family room, great room and master bedroom, and then these smaller all-in-ones in the master bath, kids rooms, and the den.
