Someone said that you cannot use the reciever with a satellite. I have it working perfectly with DirecTV but you have to make an extra connection. Connect the HDMI cable (or whatever video cable you are using) from the reciever to the TV. Then connect an optical audio cable from the DirecTV (or whatever satellite system you are using) to the Sony reciever. You have to experiment with settings but it works.

Never had Sony product before, now we have not only this Sony Bravia Dav- HDX285, but also bought Sony Bravia 46″ TV with newest model from Costco, 46VL160. Satisfy so far (4 weeks) with the systems. I use Phoenix Gold 6.5 in-ceiling speakers to replace 2 surround sound speakers. I am also satisfied to use the unit for music (CD). Unlike my (cheap) Home Theater In Box that only use 2 front speakers, this unit use 2 front speakers, 2 surround speakers and subwoofer. Using speaker selector box for 4 pair speaker, I connect 4 pair of Phoenix Gold 6.5 in-ceiling speakers to this unit so that if I select all four pair speakers that connected to surround speaker connections to this unit, the unit becomes 10.1 instead of 4.1 for music. And it does not seem loose the sound. I have not use any other feature that this unit provides (since we just moved), but will update when there is something wrong or something right (unexpected pleasant surprise) comes up.

I got this unit as a retirement gift and was hoping to replace my RCA surround sound system with it. BUYERS BEWARE: You CANNOT hook your satellite system to it. There are NO inputs on this unit — only outputs. In a nutshell, it’s a basic system that will let you enjoy your DVDs, CDs and your iPOD in “surround” sound. If you want to hear your football & basketball and video games through a home theatre system — don’t buy this unit.

It seems like a great product – sounds good, looks good – but I can’t stop it from muting itself. Watching a movie the “muting on” will randomly pop up every 30 seconds to 2 minutes. I can hit the “mute” button on the remote to un-mute it – but it will mute itself again within the next minute or two.
I have found out that if there is no HDMI cable connected it does not happen. I can listen to my TV through the Sony HDX285 using an audio cable – but if I connect an HDMI cable it will mute itself within 10 seconds. (I’ve tried 2 different HDMI cables to make sure it wasn’t defective).
What could be causing this to happen? I can’t use this product if I can’t use an HDMI cable to connect it to my TV.
UPDATE: I think I’ve fixed it. I found this information from the Sony support site which seems to have fixed the problem:

I would up the star rating if I could, to 4 stars, but it doesn’t allow a change to the star rating…

this speaker system is really good for the price, I upgraded to this system from a logitech 5.1 set of desktop speakers, so of course going from desktop speakers to home theatre speakers you would expect much better sound, and you get it. The treble and high ranges are good, not exceptional but for $300 thats fine- however, the bass is truly exceptional- nice lows, and gives you a satisfying punch, very powerful.
one important note to those not using the iPdod dock or built in cd/dvd player: if you plug in your computer or video game console via the audio in jack, you must press system menu on the remote and change the audio mode to Pro Logic, otherwise sound will only come the from the front two speakers!
