I have quite a few of these that I use at home and for travel. They are lightweight and allow another FW device to be chained to it all without an external power supply.

I was very happy with my purchase after buying another name brand that was a USB connection that sometimes works with 2 ports on your computer and sometimes dose not. Every time I connected it was a different configuration. The firewire drive is the way to go. I used someone else Verbatim Portable hard drive and found it fast and reliable especially with large amounts of file.

THE GOOD: This little drive is solid and fast. It immediately worked on my Macbook Pro with no hassle. They are very rugged and hold up in my laptop bag with no problem yet (I got my first one 8 months ago). The ability to chain the drives together is nice and allows for additional storage. The price, while sounding a little high, is right for a fast external drive that is very portable.
THE BAD: The only problem that I have run into is that chaining drives have issues past two. A third drive will load and work of a few minutes, but will lock all attached external drives after that. If you don’t need massive storage this is a problem, but for someone who is looking to have four drives chained together, it is a bother.
It is also a little pricey for an external drive, but considering the quality manufacturing and the speed it gives, not outside the realm of reason and definitely worth the price.
THE VERDICT: I would recommend this drive to anyone with a Mac looking for a fast portable hard drive. I have purchased three so far, and will most likely purchase one again in the future.

I use this drive on my Macbook to store photos while shooting events. No complaints, other than I bought mine at B&H Photo for fully half the price ($82) it was listed here at Amazon ($166).

I have no issues with mine. I use an intel mac. Plug and use right out of the box. My sister has been using hers faithfully for al least 5 years.
