First hard drive I received couldn't be format beyond 73%. Returned it for another and had the same problem. I read other reviews on the web and people had the same complaints. They may have a quality control issue with this model, in the past have been very pleased with WD. I'll step down to the 1 tb hard drive, I haven't read any bad reviews on the web about them.

For those who don't know you cannot use your Windows restore disk to format this harddrive. You have to have a full Windows DVD. Luckly I don't use Windows, I use Linux. My problem with the drive was that it would give me a Disk Boot Failure every other time I started it up. I am sure it is just a defective drive, which happens. My real complaint is that the power saving equals slower responses. I actually got better results from my old Seagate. So I am going back to Seagate. Don't get the "green" hard drive from Western, get the black. Unless you really don't want a fast response from your hard drive. I have never had problems with Western drives before, I would say it is just the "green" version that you should avoid.

These HDs are 5400RPM. That is why the size can go greater that 1TB. Look it up on Western Digitals web site...they don't list the RPMs like they do the Black series or the Blue series. Hard to find a place where they list the RPM but just understand these are 5400RPM NOT 7200.
