I just purchased this 3 weeks ago as a replacement for another drive (another brand) which crashed. I paid a data recovery service $1000 to retrieve my data, and put it onto this drive. Back at home, I plugged it into my computer to back up the retrieved data. As I turned to step away from the computer, the electric cord caught my foot, was pulled from the drive, and the drive was pulled onto the padded rug in front of the desk, the drive falling on it’s bottom corner. Not concerned, I plugged it back in, but it did not work. I took it to the same recovery service, and when they supplied it with power, it began to smoke. The drive was gone, after one light shock. Too fragile in my opinion, and too risky if you care about your data. (The data was lost – I wasn’t willing to pay for re-recovery)

Do not purchase this hard drive. There are too many reasons to list. Trial software. Backups which paralize your computer. Software which make sharing your drive with other computer difficult. One star is generous for this product. NO MORE WD products.

I have a different model, the My Book Essential, but it died just about a month after the warrantee expired, too! I see that there are a couple of other reviewers who lost theirs just after the end of the warrantee period. What’s going on, Western Digital?? These are nice drives, and they are not too expensive to purchase, but factor in possibly losing your data (happened twice to me, before the drive finally gave up for good) and also having to replace it at your expense.

Our WD My Book external hard drive worked for fine for a long time. Then, two days after the warranty expired, it died. Thank you, Western Digital. We are never buying another WD drive.

The drive worked well until 2 days after the warranty expired, then failed as if on cue. What’s the point of a “backup” drive if it’s totally unreliable?
This is the third time I’ve been burned by WD. I’ve run Seagate drives alongside WD drives for about 7 years now, and the difference is like night and day. Seagate, in my experience, makes a superior product, no contest. (Although I have no experience with Seagate externals)
In all fairness, WD is honoring the warranty anyway and sending me an upgraded model for my inconvenience. But as I told them on the phone, I no longer have the confidence to entrust my data to such a capricious piece of hardware.
Be careful with this one.
